Do Less Work
A framework for breaking neuro-performative patterns of behaviour
‘Do less work’. This is something my therapist said to me a couple of weeks ago. I am meditating on how powerful this suggestion, prayer, gift continues to be for me.
I realised, in the days following, that I am almost always working in some way or another. I am constantly doing emotional and cognitive labour through fear of what will happen if I don’t. And in doing so, I am colluding with the systems that oppress me.
This is not an entirely new thought or concept to me - all of this work is that of neuro-performing. I am actively on a journey of neuro-embodiment, learning to understand and respect my neuro-normal. I use the tools I’ve developed myself as well as taking inspiration from my teachers and support from my community. But the intertwining systems that surround us are so relentless in their determination to uphold the status quo, that I am constantly uncovering deeper levels to my own performance. This three word phrase gave me a new clarity and lens through which to view this journey.
