How Do We Recover When The Cause Remains?
Navigating perpetual burnout when respite seems impossible.
I don’t particularly like the phrase ‘autistic burnout’, because it suggests that the burnout I experience is due to my Autism, and not the unreasonable expectations, pressures and constraints that impact me due to colonial systems of harm. Some time ago, I coined the term ‘extractulation’ in place of ‘over-stimulation’, as the latter implied that it was my nervous system that was somehow at fault, and not the extractive nature of my interactions and colonial existence causing me to shutdown and meltdown. Perhaps we should be talking about ‘Capitalism burnout’, or better still ‘Colonial burnout’.
I am continually reminded that I need to do less. I am continually reminded that I need to have fewer responsibilities. I am continually reminded that the pace of colonial existence is physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually harming me.
